Bench Dog Vise

The simpler of the two vises is often referred to as a wagon vise since the moving dog travels in a block trapped within the bench top and rides along a pair of rails like a wagon or cart.

Bench dogs are a great way to hold a piece without having the clamp get in the way. The movable jaw may include a retractable dog to hold work against a bench dog. There is a matching dog in the vise.
It can be used anywhere you can drill a 3 4 inch 19 mm hole. The vise uses a pair of either wooden or metal dogs one of which remains stationary and one of which moves to pinch work of varying length between them. Their jaws are made of wood or metal the latter usually faced with wood called cheeks to avoid marring the work.
This is so you can stabilize the wood for handplaning and joinery. Woodworking vises are attached to a workbench typically flush with its work surface. The dog ist drilled and tapped at a 3 angle to ensure that work is held tight to the bench.
The right tool for the job. Bench dogs fit snugly into openings drilled into the workbench and can be square or round. As i mentioned in the previous workbench videos bench dogs allow you to wedge your work piece between the tail vise and the bench dogs that sit in your bench dog holes.
